Dec 31 2009

The Noughts come to a close and your Fraulein Marias look back at a decade filled with growing pains, made bearable by our own infinite playlists. Like all decades before it and all that follow, this was filled with moments of elation & despair, set apart by suddenly becoming twenty-somethings & finding ourselves in the workaday world.

We celebrate the Noughts and lay to rest 2009 through a musical album of sorts - snapshots captured in music - creating one of these two playlists:

a mix of your anthems for each year of the decade (2000-2009).

For those who love a challenge, your anthem for the year must have been released in the year it represents. But we are not strict mistresses and if “In My Life” was your anthem for 2003 then we shall sing along with you!

OR

a goodbye (or good riddance) 2009 mix - 12 songs, one for each month

With music we put our demons to rest & celebrate who we have become as we stand at the end of a decade.

Auf wiedersehn, 2009.

2010, get ready to rock our socks!

No matter how corrupt, greedy, and heartless our government,

our corporations, our media, and our religious and charitable institutions

may become, the music will still be wonderful.

If I should ever die, God forbid, let this be my epitaph:

THE ONLY PROOF HE NEEDED
FOR THE EXISTENCE OF GOD
WAS MUSIC.

For thousands of Filipinos, September 23, 2009 will forever be known as the day of unyielding, relentless rain. The aftermath of this storm was brutal: as of press time, 240 casualties have been reported and close to 700,000 people have been displaced. The continuing onslaught of rains brought by a second typhoon that seems determined to stay has caused massive landslides, claimed lives, and rendered roads impassable. And yet, there are other stories that have emerged from this tragedy — stories of heroism, of selflessness from unexpected sources, of volunteerism and communion.

We ask you to make your own Rainbow Playlist — think of songs that speak of hope, and the possibility of restoration amidst devastation. For further inspiration, go to http://www.ondoyphotos.com/

Addendum to Assignment 4 (or, Questions, Comments, Violent reactions)

If you’ve been trying to create playlists using playlist.com, you are probably no stranger to this message:

Due to licensing restrictions, some tracks are

currently unavailable for playing in your country.

Instead of tearing your hair out in frustration, let us pause for a moment (60 seconds, tops) to collectively cluck our tongues and thumb our noses at the powers-that-be for barring us access to an inalienable right: good music.

Done?

There, there. Hopefully you got that out of your system.

Never fear, however, for there are other music sharing sites that you can try, according to this article. Based on personal experience, mixpod.com is a great alternative. Whichever site you choose, just be sure to email us at zigazigahhh@gmail.com once you’re done compiling your playlist.

So let’s get back on track and start ruminating on that which is without the influence of human hurting. The führer commands it, people.

Tschüs!

Fraulein Magyang

ASSIGNMENT #3

I <3 to sing in the shower

a. Pre-Writing Activity:

The Wikiverse has a little corner set aside explaining the phenomenon of bathroom singing:

This habit was reported (with an attempt of explanations) centuries ago. For example, Ibn Khaldun in Chapter 1 of his Muqaddimah writes:[2]

“Likewise, when those who enjoy a hot bath inhale the air of the bath, so that the heat of the air enters their spirits and makes them hot, they are found to experience joy. It often happens that they start singing, as singing has its origin in gladness.”

b. Prepare a mix of your own bathroom hits. Does the shower weather bring you back to kiddiehood and turn you into a shiny happy person? Does it make you burst into glorious cheeziness and boogie in the shower ala Finn from Glee (please bear with the long clip, I couldn’t find anything shorter)? Or is it a refuge from the cruel world and allow you to mix your tears with the shower water as you sing out your angst (sing it, Juliana)?

Show us how the ‘red hot water dissolves the fear’ and bring us to your fantasy. We want to meet your inner diva/rocker/musical star/cheezewiz, and have front seats to your bathroom concert ;)

ASSIGNMENT #2

Leavetaking=Homecoming

a. Pre-Writing Activity: Look through photos, journal notes, airline tickets, boarding passes — any memorabilia from your longest trip away from home. (By “home” we refer to the place where you spent the longest and/or most influential part of your formative years.)

b. Assess the ensuing flood of reactions: happiness? Wistfulness? Relief? Amazement? Annoyance? Regret? Indifference? Pay special attention to contradictory feelings: excitement/dread, joy/sorrow, past/future, senti overload/real world grit, etc.

c. Flip through your music library and come up with a playlist of paradoxes. Somewhere in the universe of sounds there are songs that sum up the migratory itch: to leave is to come back, and to come back is to leave.

<3,

fraulein zigagazig

Playlist Pool:

magyang’s boarding gate songs

Rafael’s boarding gate songs (“The farther one travels, the less one knows.” - George Harrison)

Erick’s boarding gate songs (“In a sense, it would be ‘homecoming’ for me to travel outside the Philippines, to see the world’s melting pots, because I know that while I will experience them all for the first time, it will all be familiar.”)

ASSIGNMENT #1

a. Pre-Writing Activity: Listen to Heart Songs by Weezer

b. Please prepare a mix of at least 10 songs you consider to be your heart songs.  Still confused about the term? With the attachment as reference, listen carefully to the definition provided:

“…they never feel wrong. And when I wake, for goodness sake, these are the songs I keep singin’ ” (Cuomo, 2007)

By the end of the track (admittedly not one of Weezer’s best), you will know that based on the litany of tunes Rivers Cuomo itemizes, heart songs are more often than not, heavy on the cheese and mortifyingly uncool. You know what we’re talking about. They’re the songs you sing in the shower. The songs that remind you of sipping fanta at recess time during high school. Or quite simply, the songs that make you feel like the world isn’t such a cold dark lonely place, that life is happy and you know it so you should clap your hands and show it. So by all means, bombard us with Journey! Abba! Culture Club! Maybe even Michael Learns to Rock, if that’s your thing. We’ll try not to judge.

let’s start at the very beginning (a very good place to start)

In the spirit of upholding our overarching principle of good music & good times, the following guidelines are to be respected:

a. Good manners is key. Remember what yo’ mama taught you, kiddo. This means no flaming, as well as obscene, bigoted, or sexually explicit language.

b. Stay on topic. This is a music community and not a venue for business schemes. No solicitations or advertisements are allowed.

c. There’s no need to be redundant; i.e. , please do not post the same note more than once. Spam (and by spam we mean the online kind, not the glorious canned meat) sucks.

d. Fraulein Marias operate on tough love. We reserve the right to remove any postings that we feel violate these principles.

All this being said, let the fabulosity commence!
