The aftermath of this storm was brutal: as of press time, 240 casualties have been reported and close to 700,000 people have been displaced. The continuing onslaught of rains brought by a second typhoon that seems determined to stay has caused massive landslides, claimed lives, and rendered roads impassable. And yet, there are other stories that have emerged from this tragedy — stories of heroism, of selflessness from unexpected sources, of volunteerism and communion.
